Border management is currently going through significant transformation. To address the need for the Schengen Area to move towards more modern and efficient border management by using state-of-theart technology, the European Commission proposed the ‘Smart Borders package’ on 28 February 2013. This package contained legal proposals for establishing two systems that should help to speed up, facilitate and reinforce border-check procedures for third-country nationals (TCNs) travelling into the Schengen Area.
